OK, weekend tasks completed as planned.
Cleaned the intake valves... quite a bit of buildup, so the cleaning took several hours and was pretty painful. Engine has 95k? miles and probably did a longer OCI than what I do, which maybe all contributed. I wasn't able to get pics before/after, but I just used carb cleaner, some nylon and brass brushes, and a variety of picks. I've heard that CRC intake valve cleaner is pretty potent for this, if I get really bored I might go back in and try soaking with some of that. Didn't tighten the bolts up yet just in case.
HPFP swap was pretty easy. I had a big hassle getting the right parts off ebay and wasted a few dollars there along the way. Turns out there's some slightly different vacuum pump models and one of them that I got was actually seized up.
the 1.8 HPFP has a max fuel flow of ~150 mg/stroke, while the 2.0 HPFP has around 232-- about a 50% increase. You can also increase DI rail pressure about 20% at higher RPM with the larger HPFP, which helps with DI especially and short injection window. You also have to get a 2.0 vacuum pump, as the bore of the pumps and how they mount up are a little different. You'll get the best deal on ebay if you scoop up both of them still mated together, usually.
The original 1.8 HPFP is pretty limiting fuel wise, so this is a good upgrade option, short of full-blown MPI. I mulled over this a bunch, but I decided on this solution with the is38 as it will offer plenty of fuel for ~26psi up to around E30. E85 is like 2 hours away, so it's not something I'm going to run all the time or likely won't run a high E concentration when the thing is going to sit around a lot. Plus the reality is that E30 will almost certainly hit MBT on is38 boost anyways. And honestly.. I don't think I'm going to push the is38 to its limits anyways, I think a mild 20-24psi tune will be plenty scary fast. Not sure if I will run flex fuel or just have a map slot that accounts for the fueling diff and add a bit more timing.
Some tuning changes are required to run the larger fuel pump, but it's mostly copy pasta over from a 2.0 file.
Water pump looked fine, so I guess I'll leave that be.
It appears there is a small valve cover gasket into the spark plug area, but I'll probably run it for a while and see if it's a real issue or not.
Motor stuff I wanted to do is pretty much done. Will replace rear main seal and oil level sensor in the pan once I have the trans off.
Only big thing remaining is the Wavetrac LSD install. I'll definitely document that along the way. Looks like I'll be attempting it myself.
