V2 aaronc7's Goblin V2 (#6) - 2015 Audi A3 1.8 DQ250

Not as productive as a weekend as I had hoped, but still progress nonetheless.

Brake booster and every wire out of the engine bay. Trans shifter removed (that under car heat shielding was a PITA)

Only thing really left is the body harness and LPFP/module. Got all the wire out of the doors and everything from behind the dash area. Some items i in the rear are going to be a pain I feel like, but so far I can only think of the rear wheels speed sensors, LPFP wiring and wiring to the rear lights should be all I need... I think.

Hopefully have all of this done in the next couple of weeks. The cooler temps (Florida) is really making the job a lot easier.

After that, it will be time to clean up and install some upgrades on the engine/trans
- IS38
- 2.0 HPFP/vacuum pump
- Clean intake valves
- Finish bolting up the AC compressor delete bracket
- DQ250 Wavetrac install

Okay, lots of time working on the car today.

I have everything out of the car that I need. A guy is picking up the car to continue to part out in a few weeks. Once it's out of the way I'll regain a bunch of garage space to organize things better and get started working on the motor and trans stuff.

Wiring harness was a huge pain, but it is done.

Here's everything that I am keeping for myself (Other than motor/trans, and steering stuff)

Donor's been hauled off. I didn't take any pics sadly so I took this one from the guy who bought it.

Hoping to make some good progress next week, have the required hardware/gaskets in the mail now. I'll try to document these a bit more.

- IS38 swap
- 2.0 HPFP swap
- Clean intake valves / inspect thermostat/water pump

I couldn't find a local shop to do the Wavetrac in the DQ250, so it looks like I'll be taking that on as well. Will pull the trans after doing the above stuff. Have new seals, bearings and shims already. There's some spacer that I will apparently need, I'm trying to track down more info. Planning to replace the rear main seal as well.

IS38 swap complete. Install kit was just missing one coolant line O-ring... of course. Sure is easy when motor isn't installed in a car. :D

HPFP swap next

OK, weekend tasks completed as planned.

Cleaned the intake valves... quite a bit of buildup, so the cleaning took several hours and was pretty painful. Engine has 95k? miles and probably did a longer OCI than what I do, which maybe all contributed. I wasn't able to get pics before/after, but I just used carb cleaner, some nylon and brass brushes, and a variety of picks. I've heard that CRC intake valve cleaner is pretty potent for this, if I get really bored I might go back in and try soaking with some of that. Didn't tighten the bolts up yet just in case.

HPFP swap was pretty easy. I had a big hassle getting the right parts off ebay and wasted a few dollars there along the way. Turns out there's some slightly different vacuum pump models and one of them that I got was actually seized up.

the 1.8 HPFP has a max fuel flow of ~150 mg/stroke, while the 2.0 HPFP has around 232-- about a 50% increase. You can also increase DI rail pressure about 20% at higher RPM with the larger HPFP, which helps with DI especially and short injection window. You also have to get a 2.0 vacuum pump, as the bore of the pumps and how they mount up are a little different. You'll get the best deal on ebay if you scoop up both of them still mated together, usually.

The original 1.8 HPFP is pretty limiting fuel wise, so this is a good upgrade option, short of full-blown MPI. I mulled over this a bunch, but I decided on this solution with the is38 as it will offer plenty of fuel for ~26psi up to around E30. E85 is like 2 hours away, so it's not something I'm going to run all the time or likely won't run a high E concentration when the thing is going to sit around a lot. Plus the reality is that E30 will almost certainly hit MBT on is38 boost anyways. And honestly.. I don't think I'm going to push the is38 to its limits anyways, I think a mild 20-24psi tune will be plenty scary fast. Not sure if I will run flex fuel or just have a map slot that accounts for the fueling diff and add a bit more timing.

Some tuning changes are required to run the larger fuel pump, but it's mostly copy pasta over from a 2.0 file.

Water pump looked fine, so I guess I'll leave that be.

It appears there is a small valve cover gasket into the spark plug area, but I'll probably run it for a while and see if it's a real issue or not.

Motor stuff I wanted to do is pretty much done. Will replace rear main seal and oil level sensor in the pan once I have the trans off.

Only big thing remaining is the Wavetrac LSD install. I'll definitely document that along the way. Looks like I'll be attempting it myself.

Might be worth doing the compressor/alternator bracket gasket that goes to the block while you have everything off it's like a 5 minute/20 dollar job. I thought my valve cover was leaking too but it was a break in that gasket, surprised there's no service interval on those things since they're just rubber
