V1 GAVC Automotive Technology 2010 City Build

G
While looking for a new project for our Automotive Technology program we came across DF Kit Cars Goblin. The project fit into our budget for which we received a grant to help cover the cost. We are a two year automotive program for juniors and seniors in h.s. We were looking for a project we could use for future student recruitment and something we could possible sell in a raffle so the students could build a new car every school year. Our car will be taken to our four feeder h.s.'s and will be at our local car show each month in the summer which is the largest in Illinois. I will attach our progress and let us know what you think.

I want to back to school!!! Why did my high school not have such a great program (I guess it was because we still rode horses). What a great job you are doing. Wait till you get to have the kids take a ride!!! They will learn more about the impact of weight on performance than you could teach in 1000 hours of classroom time. How did school administration feel about your project?

Now thats a nice place to build a Goblin. When you're finished everyone's going to want to build their own!

Thank you for the compliments, we work extremely hard to try and have the best possible auto program around. That is only one side of the shop I will take more pics, I am terrible about remembering to take pictures. Dan to answer your question our administration and school board has been extremely supportive of our ideas and projects. We have a golf cart that we put a V-twin engine in and an 87 Chevy S10 drag truck we have been building the past several years since I am a drag racer. We were involved in a NASSQUAD build with a local police department for a DARE type car. We have raised our own money for these projects from donations or scrape metal. We will probably never race the truck but it was fun to build and take out back for some burnouts. When we first pitched the idea to our school board they were probably more excited then we were. We are a NATEF certified school which means our curriculum and program meets extremely high standards for the education we provide. The kit car works with our curriculum because every part of it and its build is part of the educational opportunities we provide. The goal is to sell or raffle this car over the summer and build a new unique goblin every year so each year gets their own opportunity. My goal is to have it done in March if we can get all the parts in time so I can use it for recruiting and advertising for my auto program.

I received a message asking about our program and how the car will be used with our students. I will answer the following questions and please keep them coming this whole project has been incredible for my students.

How many classes do you have working on the project?
I have 4, two hour classes a day starting at 6:50 in the morning. My first class is an advanced auto class with all seniors and their second year of the program. My students receive 3 college credits for completing two full years and receiving a C or better.

How many students in each class? My class sizes range from 10-25 this year I had 65 students total and I have had as many as 97. Every year changes.

How often / long does the class meet? I have my students 5 days a week for 2 hours each class

Did they all participate in the tear down?
Every student has had the opportunity to work on different parts of the project from beginning to end. My assistant break the students up into small groups and give each group a task to accomplish by them end of class. We had a complete running/driving 2010 Cobalt that we traded some of our old shop cars for. Our students went through every system and inspected the entire vehicle so we could build a parts list of what we would need to repair or replace from the donor. We also did a compression and cylinder leakage test on our engine before it was removed to make sure it was in excellent mechanical condition.

Did you take time to go over the function and operation of the parts removed that will not be re-used? see previous answer

Did / are you creating a course teaching plan as you go? We have a very detailed curriculum according to NATEF which is the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation. They require us to complete given tasks and mandate our hours of classroom/shop time. more information is available at www.natef.org NATEF is the organization responsible for creating and issuing ASE certification exams for technicians. My seniors take and hopefully pass an ASE student certification exam in Maintenance and Light Repair at the end of their senior year. I did not need to develop a new curriculum for the kit car we just use it as a lab module during each section of our task list. When we approached our school board about this project they were possibly more excited then I was and even helped us receive a grant that paid for the first two stages of the project.

Are you a member of NACAT? I am not a member but will probably join for the upcoming conference since it will be fairly local. During the summer I don't have a lot of time off as I also have a repair shop for side work and work as a crew member for an NHRA Top Fuel team and do a lot of traveling. I am a member of the Illinois College Automotive Instructors Association and attend 2 conferences per year with them. Their web site is www.icaia.org if anyone is interested.

Do you read their magazine? No I do not but I have many other subscriptions for use in the classroom such as Tomorrow Technician and Motor Age

Please let me know if anyone has more questions for us.
Thank you very much.
Andy

Hey Andy,

Thanks for all of the photos and info. We are very happy to hear that the Goblin is working well as a project for your department. The last of the stage 2 parts will be here very soon and then we'll send the kit your way.

If you and your NHRA team go to Texas Motorplex this year, please let us know. It's just down the road from us.

Great thank you Adam we are anxiously awaiting the next two stages so we can get our car out to our 4 feeder high schools to show off our project. The team I work for does about 10-11 races a year and we raced in Dallas two years ago. We will see what the owner feels like doing but I will definitely let you know if we come this year.

Hey Guys and Gals, GAVC is still here, still chugging forward on our Goblin. First off let me introduce myself. My name is Rob Schwiesow, I have worked at GAVC for 6 years, Andy decided to move on from GAVC so I took his spot and we hired another instructor Mr. Nick Wickman. I wanted to give you guys a quick update. The car is 99% finished, just a few odds and ends here and there. As planned, we are in the final phase of printing up raffle tickets and the car will be raffled off next summer. Our hopes are to be able to purchase a new kit to start on this year, or at the beginning of next school year. The kids have really gone nuts over it, some students told us they took the class just because of the fact they got to build a Goblin. I will attached several pictures of our car so you all can see it!

Let me know what you guys think!

Rob Schwiesow
