V1 LNF Fuel Pump - Filter & Mounting

Before anyone jumps - yes, the fuel filter is integrated into the LNF fuel pump. What I'm asking is has anyone taken their pump apart to inspect the fuel filter and - more importantly - located any source for replacement?

The filter is more of a fuel pickup than a filter, like a Holley pickup 'sock'.

The filter doesn't have a PN on it and from all research the LNF fuel pump doesn't exist anymore as a new part. So looking for replacement filter appears to be out of the question.

So an inline filter is probably the best bet? I'm worried about the fuel out here, since we tend to get dust storms where the 'talcum powder' dust gets into EVERYTHING. I don't want any of that ending up in the high pressure pump and the stock filter is definitely not up to the task.

Next question: does the top of the fuel pump need to be modified to install? I'm test fitting and see the hole in the flange on the top of the pump doesn't line up to center the pump in the fuel tank hole. Enlarge the hole or ???

Has anyone added any fuel tank foam to help with the LH turn fuel starvation issue? My idea is to put the foam on other side of tank baffle to slow the migration of fuel away from the pump side of the tank. Yes, no, maybe? I have not used tank foam before and am looking for someone who has experience with it for an answer.

there is a DF video about modifying the fuel pump for LNF donors...

they refer to the in tank filter as a fuel pump strainer. Delphi sells replacement strainers just have to determine which one fits. Not seeing any that have that black attachment arm though.

do you have a part number on the pump you have? the GM OEM looks different??

I've already modified my pump per the video, that's not the issue - but thanks. The fuel pump assy PN is no longer available and Delphi doesn't make (at least currently) a strainer that is compatible with the LNF fuel pump.

I'm looking for input for using an in-line fuel filter between the tank pump and the high pressure pump? Has anyone incorporated this with their LNF build? Just as important, is tank foam a good idea and has anyone used it in their Goblin tank.

Thanks! :)

Splice in a Wix 33484 and two 3/8 fuel quick connects into your fuel line, all of which can be found at O'Reilly. That filter was OE for the last of the BBC's so I figure it'll work for you and me.

Having released some of these parts for GM before... they are always marketed as "lifetime filters". It's pretty common across many modern cars, but of course is an oxymoron. That just means you're correct, any off the shelf replacements are basically non-existent and you have to replace the entire module...

As Rauq said, your best bet is an in line filter of some kind. However, if you're looking for pre-pump filtering, then adapting the current pump may be a bit tricky. You'd almost be better off going for some sort of aftermarket pump like one from AEM sold by ZZP which would be easier to adapt something aftermarket to.

You probably remember my woes with that in my build leading to fuel starvation, but now after careful re-mounting, it has worked great! No more starvation since the fuel bucket is working as intended. I doubt you'd need a foamed tank or a hydromat even for most spirited drives, but I'm with ya... I want something just in case. Check out Andrews build here. He seems to have come up with something that would work great although not sure how much it's been tested yet.

If you are going to go with an external high pressure fuel pump, then you can plumb in a tank filter like this on

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/aei-12612 -- then after the pump you can use any of these or a Canton style spin on filter.

I use one of the 8 inch ones pre pump (and it also acts as a fuel reserve for those slight cornering issues at autocross. It is mounted vertical for this reason. After the pump I use a small one like the Holley or Aeromotive brand. I forget which, but one has a 10 micron filter and the other a 40 micron. Replacement filters come in steel reusable or paper elements.

I don't like the foam in the tanks. It breaks down and clogged the filters. Some racers have used plastic coffee cans to act as baffling. One guy used rain guttering stacked in his tank.

I ended up using an aftermarket pump with a remote syphon jet to get the right side of the tank. The pump also sits in a baffle with check valves and foam. With the pump, I converted everything to AN liens and added an inline fuel filter.

I've never used a tank foam... I know they work, just curious how much of the tank needs to have foam to be effective.

I am fairly sure the whole tank needs foam for it to work porperly as the fuel is supposed to be suspended in it. If that make sense.

Why not toss an aftermarket in tank pump into a base model fuel pump sending unit? That was going to be my route until I dove down the rabbit hole of the Radium FCST and 15 gallon fuel tank goodness.
