V1 P0016 and P0017 (cleared/solved)

As a sanity check, is there anything in the harness that we modified that could cause these codes?

I have a 2009 LAP donor. I'm pretty sure I'm getting the timing chains/phasers set correctly. The P0016 came with the LAP head on a new block. I was thinking that the new block's crank wasn't compatible with my ECU so I swapped it back. The P0017 came when I moved that same head back to the original LAP block.

I re-wrapped the engine harness, but don't remember doing any wiring mods in it.

I'm getting crank. Spark off the coil packs. I'm assuming fuel because of the very rich smell in the exhaust. It also sounds like it wants to start but there is hesitation.

Anything I'm missing?

Probably not much help but

It does help. I'm going to check the cam actuators tomorrow. I've checked and double checked everything but those.

Which manual is that? I should probably try to track one down.

Factory service manual. They aren’t cheap but worth their weight in gold at times. I bought the 3 volume set on eBay. They are also available from Helms.com
I think the same info is available from alldata.com.

I checked the VVT actuators this morning. Screens looked clean and they looked great physically.
Compression was 150 psi on each cylinder.
I cranked it with the fuel pump relay out after I got it all buttoned back up. Then I installed the relay and cranked it again. It started up this time. Ran raggedy as a fool for a few minutes. The stalled out.
It pulled the P0017 code again. I’ll bust it open and do the timing again. It’s looking like I screwed it up.

I haven't used a Haynes manual in many, many years but even then I didn't trust them when things were simple. I don't know what they are like with more modern stuff. I don't trust youtube for something like this at all.

I watched the Cloyes video and checked in all-data again and I looks like I'm doing everything correctly.

FYI- The LAP intake cam slot that the phaser / cam sprocket pin aligns with is at the 10 o'clock position. Not the 5 like shown in almost all videos.

I'm going to put some power on the VVT actuators tomorrow to see if they move. Both of our local parts stores have them in stock.

10-4. I think it's possible to get cams screwed up in a tune that it can start throwing codes, although I don't know if that would be the actual codes that you are getting.

Partially solved. I had my cams swapped...physically. I fixed that and now I have solid crank and run. I still have a permanent P0017 DTC. I'm going to let it stay there for a bit hoping that it will clear itself.

Can't time cams if they're the wrong cams! Glad to hear it was something simple. Do you have the LDK or LAP block in the car now? I'm excited to see what kind of power you can make with that setup.
