SCCA autocross move from EM to XU

We have been informed of a new class we can run the goblins in, XU or extreme street unlimited. It doesn’t have the limitations of EM with weight and aero, it’s more of a “run what you brung” street class. The only real limitation is 200tw tires or higher. Basically everything else goes. Here’s the facespace one of the Houston crew sent us and here are the rules from SCCA. The Houston crew has decided to stay in EM for now, since we are the only ones in the class here. If I decide to go to nationals, I’ll probably switch to XU. Heck, we may switch locally to be correct. Don’t know yet.

The wife and I don’t know anything about auto cross but were thinking we may go check out the Memphis people and see if it’s something we would try out. I guess we could inquire about this new class as we already have the 200tw tires.

I think it is funny that SCCA made a XU class for cars like ours, then put the class on 200TW tires.
Is SCCA not realizing that light cars and 200TW tires is sketchy? Do they want us to practice ice skating with cars?
My street tires are 100TW, and the track tires are 40TW. I don't own any 200TW tires for my goblin.
I'll stick to the EM class.

After running on slicks EM is my favorite. Also not sure if my local group even has any XU cars. We have about 6 EM cars but we don’t always show up at the same time. Also if it’s your first time don’t even worry about the class cause they might put you in novice regardless. No matter whatever class you end up in just drive the car and have fun.

Go out there and take a few rides. Most people are welcoming to passengers. If someone says no, don’t get disappointed. Some only want to run solo. Just move on to someone else. It’s not hard to get involved and will really teach you the limits of the car, which is much more important than you think.

Odds are they won’t even know what em or xu is as stretch2126 said. Plus, you will be N to begin with, so it doesn’t really matter. Just go have fun.

We run pretty good on 200tw tires, but we just can’t compete with Jason on slicks. One day I may upgrade, but have work to do on the car before I make the switch.

Russell, aren't you street driving on Toyo R888R tires, which are 100TW tires?
Do you swap out to 200TW for a race?

Rttoys
yes I street drive the r888r. That’s my thing, I want a tire I can drive on the street and be on the track.

I could have swore they were 200tw though. Wonder if the new ones went 100tw? I can look tomorrow when I’m in the hangar.

Rttoys
Well whoops. The r888r are 100tw. So much for rules. :D The r1r are 200tw. Those might work well on the vette.

Whenever I can get my engine back together I will start showing up more, hopefully I can drag paul along too.

Fortunately we have a big group and a lot of them have been around a long time, so we have back ups to back ups, but I’m sure they could still use fresh blood.

i wouldn’t mind being chief of tech. That’s more my speed.

I think we have another thread on this, but I couldn’t find it, so I’m running with this one.

Now that I have run a major event in XU, here’s some notes I have taken. As far as this event (SCCA Pro-Solo) XU is grouped in Street 1 (S1) class. You will not have “XU” on your car, you’ll have “S1”. If you do nice letters and numbers, this is good to know so you don’t have to scramble to make new numbers/letters on the fly, like I did. I would assume at our local event XU would be the correct class, but may need to ask someone about that.

S1 seems to be a lot like EM, except everything has to be street legal and on 200tw tires.

I only had one here I considered my competition. It’s a factory 5 roadster. I say that because it’s the only other kit car type vehicle, all the others are just highly modified production cars. Me and the factory 5 car are running the same times, so it’s been a fun competition. All the other cars are well ahead of us, unfortunately.

no matter what, it’s still fun

here’s a list of vehicles and times from yesterday and a pic of one of the other cars in S1

Correct. There were several classes under ”S1” with different pax. I think the index is the pax? if I’m reading it right. So .871 for XU2. And I have no idea where XU2 comes from, instead of just XU.

Rttoys
Well now this makes me sad. Looking at what they ran is was hoping the PAX would be opposite
Ya. Really hard for us to compete with fully decked out WRX and STi Subi’s. That’s why I said the factory 5 car was my only real competition. It was the only one like us. If we would have got our 3rd session in on Sunday (rain and lightening cancelled it) I probably would have beat him. It was taking a bit to get use to the track setup and new tires.
