Turbo Replacement

Hi All,

Long time no talk. I could use some insight on the following. 09 LNF turbo is making noise. There is play in the shaft. Option 1 is a rebuild kit. Option 2 is a replacement. Where I could use your help is on option 2. Should I buy a ZZP, Borg Warner, or something else. Just had the car tuned so I won't be doing anything other than a K04.

Thanks in advance.

Tough call. It looks like the price range is $3-600 with $450-500 being the average, $600 being the zzp. I’d buy one that’s in the average range or bite the bullet and get the zzp. we know zzp has good customer service if there is an issue.

A little bit of shaft play is normal since they're journal bearings. I didn't know any better when I did the initial build and thought the turbo that came with my donor was bad because it had a bit of radial play. So I bought a new BorgWarner K04, and to my disappointment they felt identical. I'd just make sure that it's your turbo before making the same mistake I did.

With that said, I'm up to sell my old turbo if you're interested... it's only got 90k miles and shaft play is identical to the new one I bought. $150? Or offer whatever is fair.

edit: FWIW, before I landed on just buying a new BW K04... I read a lot of mixed reviews on aftermarket replacements, rebuild kits, guys that rebuild them, etc and decided that sticking to BW is the safest bet. The risk of sending turbo bits into a freshly built engine was scary to me.
