I got to drive my Goblin a little yesterday, it's a turbo swap LSJ with most of the parts coming from the Saab 9-3. I'm pushing 16-17 PSI so maybe 220-230HP nothing crazy. I have 275/40 17s granted it is a 320 TW tire but, man it's so easy to spin up the rears. First is useless second wasn't much better. Well anyway everybody keep the shiny side up and stay out of the ditches.

Time for some grippier tires! That's one thing I haven't liked about turbo vs super. The power comes on when it wants to, not when I tell it to. Straight line its fine, but corners it can be scary

I’m with JBINTX, I borrowed some wheels from a friend with old 300tw once and they did not feel good. I won’t get anything harder than 200 for mine.
Looking at the Toyo R888R. I am going to start autox this year(it's been closed down since 2021 here in the wiregrass region) so I hadn't thought much about tires.

The power is definitely something you have to ramp up to. It’s very easy for it to get away from you, quickly.

r888r is a good tire, I have been using them for years, but there is better:
bridgestone RE-71RZ
hoosier A7
Nankang AR-1
Maxxis RC-1
Toyo R888R

or slicks

a lot will depend on how compliant you want to be at autocross, depending on who you go through and what class you run

I have had a few fast cars and trucks but nothing with this kind of power to weight.

What wheel size are you running?

100TW tires in general take more heat to "turn on" whereas most 200TW tires are grippy out of the gate and fall of when they start heat soaking. 200TW tires are also much better in the wet than 100TW (in general). For AutoX and street, I'd recommend sticking to the 200TW category and staying away from R888's as they're functionally pretty behind the times in the super 200TW category. Checkout the grassroots tire testing article to help you choose a starting point on tire compound.

I ran a 225 wide RT615K+ when my LSJ was all stock and it was hard to overwhelm. After I added the turbo, they were easy to overwhelm. Then I put on a 245 wide RT615K+ and it's manageable. That's on a 17x8 wheel, I went from 225/45R17 to 245/40R17.

Thanks for the info, I'll go check out the article.
I know a larger (wider) tire is going to be harder to warm up, but I don't want to buy wheels right now(i need to buy a set for the drag car). Man it's rough have two hobbies..

I’m on 9x17 All around. Using 245 front and 275 rear (will probably change to 255 rear). The 9” wheel gives me a range of 235 to 275 without really distorting the tire, with 245 to 255 being optimal. In the power range I’m at, this seems like a good range of tires.

With having little weight, it’s hard to heat up tires, so you can’t go too big. But if you go too small, you don’t have enough surface area on the ground. This is where the fun begins. :p

I have a friend with an Exocet that runs 200tw in the XU class. Runs a new tire called a vitor tempesta p1 I believe. They have wider sizes too for you guys that want 15x10s. Like up to a 305. I believe in 17s they go up to 285.

I have always loved my r888r’s, but you are correct they are behind the times now. There’s much better out there for roughly the same price. I have been waiting for mine to die off so I can replace them with something different. Luckily, the vette uses 17’s so I can move tires around when need be. :p

That’s interesting. Never heard of them. I assume he likes them?
