I wanted to use rivnuts in place of the rivets but the holes in the tunnel were so close to the top of the steel I was worried that by drilling to a larger size the edge would tear out. I have used M5 rivnuts for all of the floor pans and rear firewall though. Perhaps smaller rivnuts would work better to hold the tunnel pieces down.

I used black zip ties and drilled the cover. 3 per side and 4 up top. Used 3/4" soft black foam weather stripping and everything seals up nicely. My cover did not fit perfectly. The foam helped fill the gaps. I also painted the underside of the cover a matte black. Everything blends nicely. I also used a soft pipe insulation between the cover and the hood to direct the warm air to the sides. Where the pipe insulation was crushing too much, I put a piece of leftover rubber hose inside - zipped tied that down too. Works like a charm... Whatever you use - only you will see it. The hood is not easily removed so you won't be showing it off much.

DUH... Sorry

I drilled and tapped. My problem is I would have to remove my side covers and wide seats to get to the tunnel cover. Its fairly permanent however you do it...

I think he is asking about the tunnel cover not the footwell cover.
