I am in agreement with Ross, I'll add in my $0.02 for all LSJ builds

Needs:
  • Timing chain guide bolt if not already replaced
  • Timing chain tensioner if not already replaced
  • Intercooler pump if stock isn't working
  • Fuel filter... more of a why not, as in why would you reuse the original
Shoulds:
  • Dual pass intercooler endplate
  • Clutch... maybe. See note below
As long as your clutch is in decent shape, I wouldn't say you *need* to replace it, but there's never going to be a better time to put in a new one than before/during your build. I put a lightweight flywheel in mine and I think it's a great thing to have, but it's certainly not a necessity. You'd be fine with a GMPP clutch kit unless you have turbo aspirations.

As for the other stuff, I would put them either in the "replace if necessary" or "unnecessary upgrade" categories.

To address the questions in your items list, the Cobalt thermostat, fuel pump, and intercooler pumps are reused.

I would recommend the most simplest of things until it’s in the goblin and running. This way if you have a no start condition or not running right, you can narrow it down to the transfer and not the mods. It doesn’t take long to pull it out to do whatever you want.

I kept telling myself I was gonna do this exact thing and ended up doing the engine rebuild in the process of the build. I Partially blame that for not having my kit built a year later

No my son likes to help me out when I’m on here. He likes the happy faces. Probably better then his typing at 5 years old.

I did a complete engine teardown and rebuild of my LSJ but it had 200,000 miles. I replaced everything with exception to the crankshaft and connecting rods. Everything else was replaced, upgrades where possible. I did the ZZP Stage 2 cams, stage 2 tune kit, 82# springs with titanium retainers, balance shaft delete, Ported and polished head (did it myself), new pistons/rings, bearings, gaskets, 2.8 pulley, gutted the ac compressor so it's just an extra free spinning wheel, new valves, all new timing gear, all new bolts, oil pump, fuel pump, water pump, starter, shorty exhaust header, 60# injectors, and on and on. I figured if I was going to open it up I might as well do everything now, plus I enjoyed the process. I probably could have bought a new turbo crate engine for the same price. Oh well.

I'd be interested if you could share your port and polish experience. Bonus points if you have pictures.

I find myself looking and wanting to order things that aren't needed for first running. I have to remember the "if it aint broke done fix it" mentality. I did pick up some things while I have the motor out. Which i recommend doing the Laminova Core cleaning with the motor out, it will never be easier. Next on the list is gutting the AC pump.

-Dual Pass kit
-New IC pump
-New Laminova core seals
-New Plugs
-Oil Change

I took about a month to port and polish, taking your time is key. I used a dremel with metal bits for aggressive removal and then varying levels of grit sandpaper bits for careful material removal and eventually polishing. It isn't difficult it just takes a long time. I don't really have and good pics but these are the only 2 I could find before and after.

Oh, I also resleeved my block. I have the Kent Moore tool with some custom parts for the 2.0 cylinders if anyone is interested in buying it.
