Pull dip stick slightly so air can get in the block, drain the oil, use a swivel attachment on a socket (32mm I believe?) and loosen like this. Grab paper towels and slowly pull out filter and wrap it as you pull it out. Then move away from the engine. You can also lay down clothes to catch the oil if you do drip.

I have to do this on my BMW as the filter is at the back of the straight 6 near the FW and it’s a tight fit with all the wires and what not around and above it.

LSJ has the worst oil filter location / access of any engine that I've done oil changes on. I was actually considering attempting an oil filter relocation kit installation. Has anyone done this?

Ross
The stock LSJ engine comes with a oil heat exchanger, putting the heat into the engine cooling system.
Some people have put an oil to air heat exchanger on their goblins... but you don't want to over cool your oil, so you might want to add some form of temperature regulation.

Optimum oil operating temperature is 210-240 degrees, which is why the stock oil cooler is plumbed into the engine coolant lines. Ross is correct to not over cool the engine oil. Most oil manufacturers state to not operate an engine under load with oil temps below 200 degrees.

I see some "finned" things hanging on the block. Is this the factory oil cooler?

Yes, that is the factory oil cooler on the driver side in front of the thermostat housing:

Swapping the stock M62 supercharger out for a Harrop HTV1320-LSJ supercharger makes oil changes much easier. The bypass valve is in a different location so you can access everything from up top.
