The Cobalt service manuals recommend removing the oil pressure sending unit and pressure feeding 2 quarts into the engine oil galleys. Then finish filling the oil pan to the proper level.

That's actually pretty much my plan for this weekend. And even though I have the service manuals, it didn't cross my mind to check and see what they recommended.

I personally would pull the plugs and spin it until I felt it was pumping oil, but there is probably some risk to it that an OEM can not chance. An OEM needs to have procedures in place that are 100% best possible practice.
