Goblin in the Barret Jackson Auction Lineup!

G
Barret Jackson only allows reserve on very, very high-end vehicles. Probably 99% are no reserve vehicles. I would have run it through a Mecum auction since they allow reserve on anything, although the auction fee is higher.

It’s a bit sad to see a Goblin sell for so little, but on the other hand, I think we all tend to overestimate what our cars are worth. In my opinion the odds were definitely stacked against the seller: an automatic, naturally aspirated (NA) build with a city frame just isn't the most desirable configuration .

I’m still happy with my Goblin, though. Whenever I consider switching to a traditional sports car, I remind myself that the yearly depreciation alone would cost me more than it takes to keep the Goblin on the road. Also seeing the front suspension work is addicting to me :)

Yes, I was blown away by the hammer price. I’m kicking myself for not registering to bid ahead of time. I also had some things going on at work on Monday so I kind of forgot the auction was happening. I know the NA/auto configuration gets less interest, but I’d love to have it as my first. Still looks like a nice setup!

So the going market price then, not an absolutely ridiculous price made by unknowledgeable bidders thinking they are buying a sandrail/dune buggy. It's all about timing and knowing who your audience is and putting a Goblin up for bid at B-J, with no reserve, didn't bring the expected price. Someone got the deal of the century, BUT was it someone who knew what they were bidding for? I'm sure there are several builders on the forum who could have bid on this - if we had been paying attention - just to have second Goblin at that price.

I'm so sad I missed this. I'm over here about to spend 6x that to get one and someone got this for an absolute steal.

That's like being sad you didn't win the lottery. If people knew what it was going to sell for, well market dynamics then says it's going to sell for much higher than that as more bidders try to get it at that magical price. Can't tell the future, so don't be upset about it.

Hell if I KNEW it was going to end up at that price, I would have put bids on it too. Then guess what, it's no longer selling at that price.

I dont mind paying what I am. I am actually getting a good deal (I Think) lol. even if i had seen that one i dont think i would have bid simply because its not what i want. just sad to see it go for so cheap knowing that someone probably had way more in it and probaby wasnt expecting the outcome but hope whoever bought it is enjoying it.

it had everything going against it: 2.2/auto, street chassis, no major addons usually doesn’t go for a lot. Plus, it was in a small market due to it being in the first few hours of the first day of a 4 day auction, where people only pay attention to the 2 popular days. Hell, you could narrow that down to the few evening hours of friday and Saturday. I knew it would go cheap, but not that cheap.

A Goblin is a labor of love - to state it nicely. As far as a ROI, it is not a winning proposition. When going into a Goblin build, the builder needs to have an up front understanding that you will likely spend x2 (some of us x3) beyond what you first expect. The replacement of worn/corroded parts, new fasteners, paint/powder coating, wheels/tires, seats/belts and other basics add up quick. And this doesn't include any upgrades or modifications to make a Goblin your own, which can almost get out of hand, especially if you have engieeritus. :p:cool:
