Steering wheel quick release options

Hey Goblin builders!

The cheap NRG thin quick release knock-off I initially bought for the Goblin has WORN OUT and created some sketchy play in the wheel.

I ordered the NRG one, but turns out, they are sold out everywhere and are on backorder.

Might have dodged a bullet anyway considering this is the same design, and likely would have worn out as well.

Has anyone used this style?

I think I want to use something like this, but I'm not sure the cobalt uses "standard 36 spline GM" shaft?

There is also a weld-on style very similar that works for 3/4" shaft, but I'm not sure I want to weld it on.....

Any experiences you guys can share?

I need something pretty thin as the steering wheel is already closer than I'd like. I'm just stuck using one, as my hood mounted windshield prevents opening the hood very far without removing the wheel.

I tried a weld on spud with a longacre quick release at first. It was fine until I went to assemble the column and couldn't fit the bearing anymore because the shaft OD was larger than the bearing ID at both ends.

The Cobalt column has an indexing feature machined into it rather than maintaining a consistent spline pattern about the OD. I can't tell from the picture if the splined adapter accounts for that feature or not, so some modification may be required to make that work.

Have you looked at the dimensions of the quick release and hub that DF is selling to see if it would help with the spacing?

Being SFI rated it shouldn't fail, as long as it is installed correctly. A weld on spline to the steering shaft is probably best, but as @k.rollin pointed out be certain the shaft bearing fits over it or have it in place before welding. Unfortunately, this type of quick release typically adds 2-3 inches to the steering wheel position putting it closer - but the DF adapter (the aluminum cylinder with the caps) could be shortened or the electric steering box could be moved forward.

I just installed the new DF Steering Wheel with quick release last night. Its a great option, the quick release is nice and secure, the wheel is fantastic too!

Has anyone used the DF quick release and installed it keeping the horn button in the center of the steering wheel?

I planned on connecting the horn.
You would need to add a telephone cord or clock spring to the steering column in order to take the twist out of the horn wire.

Those parts are not included in the steering wheel kit, so you have to engineer it yourself.
So far, this is on my wish list for my goblin.

thanks for all the input guys! I won’t try the DF quick release simply because it’s thicker than the style I have and the wheel CANNOT get any closer (I’m over 6’ in std length chassis)

I tried another suppler on the NRG one, I know it works and is hopefully much higher quality than the no name copy I have..

Plan B if they’re also out of stock is to try one of the weld on styles, but weld the collar as far back on the shaft as possible

You can cut down the steering "tube" to shorten the overall length.

NGK - SRK-177H ( Hub Adapter)
NGK - SRK - 400BK ( Black Thin Release)
NGK - SRK - 500B (Hub Spacer)
