V1 The wife’s Goblin, 2007 L61 F23

Markm
I’m looking for ideas on a tool kit for the wife’s Goblin. Mostly thinking of a tool roll with some junk tools to hopefully get by with. I have a second tactical seat back Molle loop for her with a couple pouches but want to add a tool roll for just in case. Any suggestions on what to put in it other than the normal few wrenches, sockets, hammer, pliers, tape, zips ties ?

Zip ties, channel locks, and self sealing silicone tape can get you out of a lot of binds. Those three things have bailed me out a few times.

I use a motorcycle tank bag hanging off the rear bar where the hood mounts too. Stuff it with wire, butt connectors, electrical tape, multitool and such.oh and a bottle of water. Never know when you need that

As my 2.4 collection starts to accumulate I’m getting the idea of maybe building a 2.4 bottom end with the 2.2 L61 head for the supercharged engine. I know everyone is gonna say go turbo but I would rather use what I have on hand

The 2.2L engine never came with a supercharger... only the LSJ 2.0L did.
So you are making an engine with parts from 3 engines?

That’s correct. The one from my parts hhr has the oil cooler on it and a good bottom end (broke timing chain) I still have the original 2.2 from the donor with a hole in the block and a supercharger setup that was on a 2.2

where’s the best books or interweb pages to find information on swapping these parts around? I have read here and there articles where it can be done but I haven’t found any one good source for a lot of what I want to accomplish. I may be having to go make some new friends at the dirt track :)

Shadetree mechanic guidelines used to get gaskets first - head, intake, exhaust, etc. - and then match them up to the parts you want to swap around. Checking for bolt holes, cooling and oil passages, and bore sizes of everything you wanted to match up. This will work for short block to head to manifolds and checking for accessory locations and mounts. This seems to work on most engines as long as you stick within the family (SBC, SBF, BBC, etc.) and the Ecotec I-4s seem to follow this too. May be worth a shot and you can be the 'expert' for doing these kind of swaps.

I don't know that there's a good single source, but with some intensive searching you can usually get general answers to questions online. CobaltSS.net has been one of my best sources of info.

I believe a 2.4 bottom end, '07 L61 head, and LSJ supercharger should all work together. I don't think there's anything that would keep any same-generation bottom end and head from mixing together. I know GM installed LSJ M62's on L61 heads, and I don't think there's anything different enough about the model year-specific '07 L61 head that would make it incompatible. I would double check the PCV between the head and LSJ intake manifold to be sure. ZZP's phenolic intake spacer might be able to accommodate some misalignment if there are any concerns there. It's probably a good idea to keep your cylinder head as your computer and wiring are set up for it, and 2.4, 2.0, and both earlier and later 2.2 heads are all different from what you have.

When you get into mixing bottom ends from different engines is when it gets a little more tricky.

The crank signals may be different between an LE5 and an L61. Will have to figure out which computer to run it with.
Also will probably have to drill a hole in the head for the PCV for the LSJ supercharger manifold.

You need the 24x crank reluctor wheel off the 2.2 L61 or 2.0 LSJ if you want to run a 2.4 LE5 block and rotating assembly with an L61 head. Other than that there are no concerns AFAIK.

All great tips. Thanks guys, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and I figured the crank signal would be one issue. I was wanting to get a billet crank but haven’t dug into who makes them and if I can get one with the proper reluctor. The supercharger kit I have was on a Goblin but I can’t remember who it was I got it from and was on a 2.2. The only real reason I was thinking of using the 2.4 bottom end is cause I have two of them now I may be able to use. It may be easier to get another L61 and build from there but I’ll keep reading up on it and see where it goes.
