One aspect of Discord that could provide a lot of value is, the ability to talk real-time with anyone, or multiple anyones at the same time, without needing to exchange phone numbers.

But many builders are older folks who would prefer the forum as it is now and would not adapt to Discord too well.

Again, I'd support it and participate, but there's no need to reinvent the wheel.

There is already a Facebook Goblin site that is splitting off some information already, adding a third location may likely compound the scattering of information further - IMO. When one or more DF forum members are on-line and posting into the threads it is very close to real time - within minutes for most critical items. New ideas and innovations are always welcome, but the functional interactions and limitations of some need to be weighed against the realities of how communications are made by the majority of the forum family. No insult or discord is intended.

So if it is real time then people need to be on it, what happens if no one is on it do you open it up and see the conversation later and then respond to it? I don't understand what it is chatroom, forum, instant messenger, another forum? My brother and sister in-laws both want all our family members to get on discord because they say communication is easier, yet they still start group texts with everyone.

there are two facebook pages, I use both, along with the reddit group and this forum. I'd try a 5th option too. I think there are quite a few builders that don't use this forum, but I do link to it when giving answers for questions a lot.

It's essentially a real-time chat room, but keeps history (so yes, people can get on and catch up after the fact). It allows easy posting of images and video links, and has voice channels that many people can use at the same time, which also allows for screen sharing.

I don't think it would revolutionize anything for the Goblin community, but I could see it being handy in some ways. My main concern is that it would not be embraced by much of the community here, and thus would end up mostly pointless.

I'm in multiple Discords already and would participate but I don't speak for everyone, just myself.

I use Discord for a few of my other hobbies and it does fill the needs a forum does not - specifically voice channels and screen sharing. I'm unsure how often either of those would be required for our topics.

I think it is less of an overlap than FB is of this forum. I follow both FB groups but both seem to be either a repeat of this forum or people directing people to this forum for more detailed information.

Always like seeing this box at the front door. More parts for the engine build collection.

Top: Laminova tube Orings, ZZP +5MPH stickers,
Middle: Crankshaft front and rear seals, LNF oil squirters for each piston, injector Orings, ZZP magnetic beer coozie... this thing holds a full beer on the side of a fridge... or any steel surface. That's worth at least $4!
Bottom: magnetic oil plug, bolt and ZZP green timing chain guide, crankshaft bearings

It must be nice when you can actually receive internal parts. My son and I are still waiting on a few pieces for our 4.6 4v rebuild.

I'm keeping the Ecotec parts list to a minimum for now. I think I have everything but until the garage warms up a little bit, I won't figure out what $2 part/gasket I forgot to order for my short Goblin to-do list.

My wife saw the stack of new tires.
Alice: "You bought bald tires."
Me: "They have DOT approval."
"Your not driving those on the street are you?".
They are tread wear 100, and my racing tires are tread wear 40, so these are my hard tires.
But they don't have any tread! The last tires barely had any tread, and these are worse.

Gotta love Arkansas. The po-po don't even pull you over if you're running the racing slicks.
Best part of getting new tires is abusing the old tires. :)

Gearing up for a return trip to Houston?…. :)

I need the racing slicks to hang with the Houston crew. My winter project of swapping the LSJ motors hasn't been done yet, and winter is gone. Last year in Houston is when I learned that my 0-60 times were slow, and I am hoping the 140K LSJ is in better health than the 200K LSJ. The timing chain needs replacing... so while I'm in there... might as well build it back up as a race motor.

My shop needs to finish the CNC to make room for the engine swap. We replaced the gantry rails and linear bearings after a few failed testing runs with the older light weight rails.

This winter we did get the vacuum chambers built inside the table, and plumbed. The table is divided into 9 vacuum chambers, and each chamber can apply more than 6000lbs clamping force. So we added an extra support in the middle each chamber.

Here we have the electrical box with a furnace filter on one side, and a fan on the other. Clear doors to allow us to see the LED lights on the inside electronics.

The air bags went off!

They went off in the donor Cobalt, I just used them as a fire blanket, while I welded on a Cobalt rear view mirror.
Notice the TIG "gas" pedal on the passenger side? My first time welding while sitting in the car.
The rear view mirror is behind the front halo bar... well mostly.
