V1 Scotts 2009 SS/TC #478

DUNE
I kept the donor check valve and will use new hose (3/8?) to connect the two (old hose dry rots in the desert) - making certain the air flow arrow points toward the engine.
So you reused the braided metal line with the fuel line type connection where it connects in the engine by the turbo then just extended it with the 3/8" hose to the intake?

I took the braded line off the check valve and used new fuel line connectors and hoses on each end.

So a little update on the safety inspection that I had brought the car in for last week

For all future Manitoba builders!
When I took the car in last week for a safety inspection it failed on quite a few things. Some are easy fixes, some will take a fair bit of work and a couple are just unreasonable. Here is the list

  • No VIN
  • No bumpers
  • No side markers
  • No fenders (I installed the DF fender kit now so this should be good)
  • No reflectors (I just need to pick up some reflective tape at a hardware store)
  • ABS, airbag, stability control and ebrake dash light (temporarily just taped them over but will be getting them turned off with HP Tuners)
  • No catalytic converter (I just cut up the stock downpipe temporarily)
  • No sun visor
  • No defrost
  • No wipers
  • No 3rd brake light (I have a 8" LED strip with brake light functionality on order)
  • Floor not secure (More on this later)
All the items on that list that are struck through I did already fix and were very easy to do. The ones in red font I am really hoping they will overlook as they will either require significant modification or are just plane unreasonable (sun visors and defrost) and the others I am currently working on

In order to get a VIN for a kit car in Manitoba, you need to pass everything on a COI (Certificate of Inspection) form, aka a safety, except for the VIN number itself. You have to be able to prove that it passes every mechanical inspection on the safety sheet but fails because it dosent have a VIN number. Then you have to send in the failed safety inspection sheet as well as a couple pictures of the car and fill out a new VIN application to MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance). Then once you send that in and get approved, they will send you a new custom car VIN number which you can supposedly use to register and insure the car! (sounds easy right...)

Floor not secure! I had a good chuckle when I read the mechanics note on this one. Apparently the floor is a little to thin for MB standards. So, I had some 3/4" plywood lying around at home that I cut up to fit in the gaps between the 1" square braces on the floor. I will be supporting said plywood with some angle iron brackets that I will be cutting up and screwing into the square braces. This should bring the plywood flush with the braces. Over top Ill be cutting up and gluing in some red and black diamond stitch faux leather upholstery. I might also do a rubber mat for the area where your feet rest when driving so the upholstery doesn't get to scuffed up. This should make the floor feel really solid and make the interior look more finished!

Someone was offering a device on here that would turn them off but he stopped making them and the last one was sold here recently. Don't remember who bought it.

Is it required for them to be off for the inspection? They are so far out of the line of site while driving that mine don't bother me.

Ah shoot, is there anyway to electronically remove those lights? If not, I'll just have to go in and cut them out I guess
Pulling the cover and putting electrical tape over the offending lights takes all of 10 minutes. You don't even have to take the cluster off the car.

There is a guy at MPI who has the final say on what passes for kit cars, but unfortunately he is on strike. The current plan was to wait for him to get back to work so he can possibly give me an exemption on a few of these things. It would be really nice not to have to add bumpers as that seems like a lot of fabrication for a part I don't really like.

My university courses just started up again and with our endearing MB winter just around the corner, I won't be having tons of free time regardless so I'm hoping to slowly chip away at things over the winter and get the car ready/legal for spring

I've done that already as my temporary fix but if.you look closely you can see the tape. Nobody else will notice it likely, but it bugs me.

And yes those lights were a point the safety failed on
