Donor Opinions / Questions

I saw that too and considered it. I then saw Michigan and was worried about rust. Your opinion, would that amount of mileage worry you?

Depends on your goals ya know? I've torn my apart for mods every winter. If you put it together as is and you're not afraid to give it a refresh later down the road it would be a decent option. If you want to "set it and forget it" then I would go lower miles

Not afraid just have never done it and don’t know what all is involved.

Yep, the cars that came with 3-bar MAPs and the GM Performance badging also have a modest 290-hp tune from the factory.

Hmm, this would be news to me... Mine had the GM Performance badge(s) but not sure about the MAPs. Now I need to take a closer look...

I'm not sure that the GM Performance badging means anything other than it's an SS. My camaro SS had it and it was stock with no upgrades.

Kit instructions says it should have had 2 stickers but doesn't mention the GM Performance Badge.

My guess is that about 1/2 of the "upgraded" SS where done by the dealer, the remaining were done through aftermarket tuning. And probably a few that added the 3 bar sensors without any tuning and wondered why their car didn't run better after the swap.

That’s a very good point.
If you go with the rusty donor I can source subframes in the south easily. I don't have any idea about shipping prices or methods but I'd ship one if it's what you need. Being close to both I-85 and I-75 in GA I am on the way to FLA! (On I-75 I usually meet folks at Summit Racing in McDonough GA parking lot. Very easy to find!) I find bits for Goblin builders, as a hobby. I'm not in the used parts biz.****
An overlooked item about Cobalt's is that they were designed to be flat towed, like you see behind motor homes.(Look in the owner's manual!) And a manual SS is virtually always flat towable. I think both Northern Tool and Harbor Freight sell inexpensive tow bars and a magnetic tow light set. I would suggest you pull off the front bumper cover and bolt the tow bar to the bumper. "Mom's mini van" would probably tow one with little effort.(Check it's manual for towing specs)*****
Keep the tow bar for your Goblin as they tow very easily and it beats letting a tow driver possibly hurt it, having trouble loading any car as low as a Goblin.

Bidding starts Thursday afternoon. Does anyone have a recommendation for shipping services? Car is located in Louisiana and I got an estimation from Uship for $900-$1000. Unfortunately it’s too far from my house and would cost me just as much if not more with time away from work to pick it up.

While this looks like an ideal donor, keep in mind you will be hit with several hundred bucks in fees and handling by copart and the scrapyard. Plus whatever it costs to ship. You might want to keep looking for something closer to Ohio.

So auction tomorrow for the rear crashed 09 LNF with 95k miles. I just found an 07 SS/SC. It is located in Michigan but has lived in South Carolina for 3 years and has almost no rust. It has 127k miles and body is kind of rough but who cares.

Hypothetically winning the LNF bid around $550-$650 puts me around $2,500 with shipping.
LSJ is $2,500 and I may be able to talk them down a little. It is tuned by ZZP and has 60# injectors.

If both were presented in front of you for the same price, what would you choose?

I’ve been reading up on autocross and it interests me once I get the car built. Other than that the goblin is replacing motorcycles and will be a hobby for me to stay busy and have something I’m proud of to hit the back roads.

pictures of the LSJ (yellow) are not the best but all I have from the post.
