Engine prep Day -2
Removed the thermostat housing and front cover. Started hitting the engine with a wire wheel. Starting to clean up pretty nice. I’m planning to run a remote oil cooler. Trying to figure out if I can get a thermostat cover the is not for the equipped for the factor oil cooler. Would look a lot cleaner with out having to loop the coolant lines that went to the oil cooler.

Engine prep Day -3.
Finished taping off the engine, hit a couple spots with a spot media blast. Use some VHT flameproof coating silver as a primer, then finished with a can of rust-oleum engine enamel. Came out pretty nice. Think I may end up painting the valve cover in the orange that I am going to do the frame in, but not sure yet. Plan on running an engine cover so probably doesn’t much matter. Next up is to start on the transmission.

Chop day -2.
Made some more progress cutting down to small enough pieces to load up and take to scrap. 5 blades so far, making good progress.

Chop Day - 3
Finished getting the donor cut down. Two trips to the recycler with small pieces, then got a flat bed tow truck for the back half. Spent more for the tow truck than I made back on scrap. But the wife’s happy, the donor is gone.

Transmission prep Day - 1
Pressure washed the transmission, then taped off and spot hit some areas with the sandblaster. Then used rust-oleum engine paint. Came out really good. New wheel seals arrived today. The new clutch kit and flywheel also arrived from ZZP. The goal will be to get the wheel seals done tomorrow.

New Cloyes Timing Set w/water pump arrived today. I have a head gasket kit on the way. Plan to pull the head this weekend and have ready to send out Monday to make sure that it’s flat. I’m pulling the head because I think I got a little bit of media blast in the intake. It didn’t look like much and was able to wipe it out easily. But, rather be safe than sorry so I need to make sure I didn’t get any into the cylinder.

Going to get the SC intake manifold tanked to get all of the oil out. Plan to add an oil catch can, should solve that problem. Lots of parts have been received, once the head is back will be able to really start to make some progress.

But, rather be safe than sorry so I need to make sure I didn’t get any into the cylinder.

The head bolts were covered in oil when I pulled them out, which I’m not sure if that’s normal. The spark plugs were pretty black.
I know that the timing chain has marks that are suppose to align to the Intake and Exhaust gear marks, that was not the case. The mark did not align with the intake mark and was no were close on the exhaust or crank. Inside of the valve cover had a lot of burnt oil.
There question is do I rebuild the engine or gets a replacement.

My head bolts were the same way and the pistons looked similar to yours. 140k miles does that to the pistons. The bolts I’m guessing go in through an oil channel I guess, but it seems to be normal. Glad you brought this up because I forgot and I don’t want to use ARP Ultra Torque on those bolts when I put the head on. I don’t think it mixes well with oil

The intake and exhaust chain marks only align once for every 2 rotations (Lonny is right, Many, Many rotations) of the crank, and since there are 3 marks on the chain, it isn't always obvious which marks to check. I would clean it up and run it. Maybe get some new special cam shafts & rockers - you can always move them to a new motor if you get to that stage later on.

If we counted the teeth on the crank sprocket and the number of cam chain links, we could calculate how many rotations before the 3 links will re-align.

Engine Day- 6
Went ahead and ordered a new LSJ Gen 3 short block from ZZPerformance. May still rebuild the original at some point just to be able to go do it. Took the head to a local shop and got it cleaned, valves cut, cams polished. Looks much better. Had the intake manifold and valve cover hot tanked. Much better. Got the valve cover and intake painted with Steel-It, looks awesome. Installed the dual pass end plate and painted the supercharger and a bunch of other parts. Pics to follow.
Removed the oil pan for use on the new block, I’m glad I did. I had thought I heard metal in the pan and I surely glad I pulled it. Found on of the timing guide bolts in the pan. There where none missing when I removed the timing, so I assume it was from the timing job before. Ordered updated parts from ZZP and OTTP to harden and strengthen things.

Main Harness day - 6 or 7, I have honestly lost count. I finished the last of it up last night and finished the taping today. I keep the dimmer, fog lights and the heated seats. Dimmer - wasn’t sure how bright the instrument panel will be at night. Fog lights, even if I don’t put fog lights on, I figure I could use that circuit for under glow lighting. The heated seats, well heck, it already had them so why not keep a function.
I am downloading files from ALLDATA to build a continuity check list. I would rather read out each pin to know it’s good, than to be chasing gremlins later.

Wiring Harness Testing Day-1
Have all of the diagrams printed from ALLDATA, the wife is going to help me start continuity testing pin-to-pin today and tomorrow. Then on to straightening the garage for when Stewart delivers.

Haven’t made a post in a little while. Was out of town went Stewart delivered, luckily my wife and son were home. It is such an awesome experience to see this truck in front of your house and the professionalism that is on display.

Got all of the boxes out from DF, inventoried what I received and separated out the items that need to go off for powder coat. I’m a Florida Gator fan through and through and picked my colors based on that. Will be doing the chassis and most of the pieces in Red-orange neon, some parts in hot candy blue and the floor pans, bulkheads in wet black. I think I am going to wrap the hood and engine cover in a blue cross weave vinyl.

Got the head back from the shop, all cleaned up and cams polished. Had the valve cover and oil pan hot tanked and I painted with Steel-It black. Sticking with factory head for now. Got the head installed with ZZP head bolts, installed the phenolic spacer, M62 supercharger spacer plate, SC bypass valve. Installed the intake and SC. Installed the flywheel and clutch. Mounted the new throw bearing, clutch pipe and elbow. (Clutch was weak in the donor, figured I replace it all and fix the issue). Also got the transmission married to the engine.
Chassis is out for powder coat. Ready to start the assembly as soon it returns.

The bearing on the intermediate axle was rough when rotating. Out with the old and in with the new. Another part added to the engine.

Assembly Day - 1
So today is the day. Finally have everything is one place and able to get started. The wife was much help today. Got the radiator hoses pulled, the winch worked great. Took longer to prep the end of the hose than it did to pull them. Got the floors attached, bought a pneumatic riveter from harbor freight and it didn't work. So broke out the hand riveter, my forearms are tender. But it all went together without any problems. Rack installed and clutch and rear break lines installed. Got the wife and have her back right side up. Not bad for day one.
