While doing a drive log for ZZP and OK'd to do some WOT pulls I lost all boost. Engine did not die and I was able to drive the 10ish minutes to the house. I am leaning towards head gasket failure. Opinions and questions are welcome. I attached the drive log.
Changed oil on monday drove for about 20 minutes and pulled in to the garage to park for the night and verify leaks. All was good no noise no leaks. Drive log the next day.
SYMPTOMS
1. The engine lost ALL boost, the gauge was showing zero but did fluctuate as the throttle was manipulated driving home.
2. Heavy white smoke out the exhaust.
3. By the time I got home the engine was making a whine noise that would coincide with the throttle usage.
Inside of A2W is clean of oil or coolant.
Performed Pressure test on all cylinders and engine cranked fine.
Here are the QnA's from ZZP/myself.
How do all of the charge pipes and couplers look? - No obvious splits, tears or loose connections
Since you had the intake and downpipe off was there any play on the turbine and compressor wheel? - maybe a slight back and forth in the axle of a 32nd or 64th of an inch. Nothing measurable without a special tool in my opinion. When I spin the wheel I can hear it spinning but nothing I would call unusual but none the less its the one place I might expect to hear nothing when I spin by hand.
Normally if we see the internal bearing structure fail and it dumps oil out the exhaust, we will see quite a bit of oil in the turbine housing, but it looks pretty clean. - This was my first assessment and the reason I took the intake/exhaust components off but I do agree both sides are pretty clean and no obvious failure there.
Do the wheels spin freely and at the same RPM while you spin them by hand? - Yes
Does the wastegate flapper open with movement of the actuator arm? - The flapper is in the close position I did attempt to move the flapper with no luck. However I didnt put much effort into it and moved along. Should I be able to move it easily?
what was compression on all 4 cylinders? - 150 at cylinder 1 and 4, 120 at 2 and 3. This is why I am leaning towards head gasket at this time. BUT could this "low but still within range pressure" account for the lack of boost and also the whining the closer I got to the house?
What color was the smoke? White or blue? White for sure.
Timing chain or Head gasket both could certainly account for the smoke and no boost pressure! The whining still remains, I did not try to determine where the whining was coming from, I pulled into the garage a turned the engine off ASAP to prevent any additional damage.
